The study was a haven of warmth and peace. I sat beside the fire and welcomed the silence left after the departure of my brother and his family. I finally retrieved Harold’s letter and resumed reading.

“…After a while, Billington snapped out of whatever funk he was in and looked at me with eyes far too clear for someone who’d just drunk almost an entire bottle of port. ‘Fanning,’ says he, ‘I intend to go back to Cambridgeshire for a while. I just want to rest. I want time to heal and try to hold onto all that was good about being here. After that, I just don’t know.’ He was quiet after that, thoughtful. I was quite relieved when he left. I know that sounds churlish but he used to be such excellent company…”

I poured myself a glass of port and stared into the fire. Evans had drawn the curtains against the night and I was grateful for Endersley. I found some small comfort in knowing that Marcus probably slept under the same stars. I just wished he slept under the same roof.

I carried the glass to my desk, found paper and pen and sat down to write. I had a good solicitor in London. He would help me find Marcus. After that, the rest would be up to me.
